Meanwhile, back on the farm: On the evening of October 31, 2022, Dan opened those barn doors to heaven and was reunited with his Margie girl. His laughter, smile and hugs will forever be missed.

Dan was born March 18, 1927, on the banks of Otter Creek just as the sun was coming up and the birds were chirping. His mom said he was smiling and hungry. He was born to Fannie (Emmons) Ramsey and William H. Ramsey, Sr. On October 19, 1947, Dan married the love of his life Margie Holder in a double wedding with their friends Wilbur “Buddy” Rogers and Thelma Richardson. They were married 68 years and 9 months before Margie’s passing in 2016. Dan was baptized in Otter Creek and has been a member of the First Baptist Church in Snyder since 1968 where he served as church superintendent.

Dan had many accomplishments during his life. Dan served eighteen months in the Army before being honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal and receiving a World War II Victory Medal. He was a farmer and cattleman most all his life. Dan and Margie were recognized as Farm Family of the Year in 1990 by the Oklahoma Farm Bureau. While serving in Iwo Jima, Dan was trained in basic electronics and radar repair. Dan used his training to become a radio repairman as a federal employee on Fort Sill. During his time on Fort Sill, he says his proudest moment was receiving the Zero Deficit Program award. He received a plaque and a congratulatory letter from President Jimmy Carter.

Dan served on several boards and committees including Fairlawn Cemetery, Agriculture committee, and Mountain Park Master Conservatory. He was also a member of the O & O Riding Club. In 2019, Dan received the Outstanding Alumni Award at Snyder High School and was Grand Marshall in 2021. In addition to being a farmer and cattleman, Dan was also a storyteller. He wrote a new Christmas story for family and close friends every year and before his passing made us promise to send out this year’s Christmas story since he won’t be here. In his eighties, he became known far and wide for his Facebook posts and collected many new fans. His storytelling will be greatly missed. Dan tried his hand at a few musical instruments over the years, but will be remembered most for his ability to play the harmonica. He was awe struck the first time he heard DeFord Bailey on the radio and just had to learn to play just like him. Dan enjoyed woodworking, gardening and beekeeping over the years. When the men in town no longer had a place to play cards, Dan built The Ramsey Game Room for them to use. Dan will be remembered for many things including his kindness, his generosity, and his sage advice. His family will miss his hugs, his smile and his laughter also. He was the best husband, daddy, grandpa, great-grandpa and great-great grandpa anyone could ever have.
There will never be another “Meanwhile, back on the farm” story, but his memory will always live on in the hearts of those he has left behind: his four children: daughter, Ginny Nunley and her husband Jackie of Sterling; son, Joe Ramsey of Lone Grove; daughter Kathy Ramsey of Mountain Park; and son Bret Ramsey and his wife Carolyn of Chickasha. He is also survived by his sisters: June Paschal of Jacksboro, TX and Blanche Ross; his brothers Willie Ramsey; Joel Ramsey; and George Ramsey of Brownsville; his brother-in-law Kenneth Holder and his wife Shirley of Snyder; sister-in-laws Dovie Ramsey of Snyder and Helen Holder of Lawton. He is also survived by his grandkids: Greg and Tammy Williams; Shawn and Darla Nunley; Danny Ramsey; Justin and Bobbie Ramsey; Luke and Jackie Lynn Christian; Kristy and Clint McLaughlin; Terry and Lee Ann Stach; Cory and Jessica Ramsey; Lisa and Laura Robinson. He was also survived by his great grandchildren: Morgan and Cody Bevel, Parker and Tatum Williams; Dara and Cole Rogers; Paige, Jadyn and Emma Nunley; Grayson and Layton Ramsey; Ariel and Barry Hicks; Jessica and Taylor Myers; Jadyn and Jacob Christian; Zane and Avri Hutchinson; Jordan and Dylan Woods; Dottie Sennett and two great-great grandchildren Lily and Hunter Hicks and two more grandsons on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Fannie Ramsey; his brothers Bill and John Ramsey, his brother-in-law Arlie and wife Betty Holder; his brother-in-law Joyce Holder; sister-in-law and husband Jim and Alma Snyder; his mother and father-in-law Viola and Leon Holder.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that we honor Dan and his dedication to the cemetery by making contributions to the Fairlawn Cemetery Association P.O. Box 185 Snyder, OK 73566.
