September is National Suicide Prevention and Recovery Month

September 27, 2023

There is still time to join in honoring the lives lost to suicide and supporting Oklahomans struggling with substance use disorders during National Suicide Prevention and Recovery Month. This is a significant opportunity to raise awareness, discuss the highly stigmatized topic, shift stigma and spread hope and vital information to those affected by suicide and substance use.

Mental health is a critical part of our overall well-being, and it affects all of us in one way or another. Whether dealing with stress at work, coping with the loss of a loved one or managing a mental health illness, we all face challenges that can impact our mental health and, in some instances, lead to thoughts of suicide and substance abuse.

This month, we can unite as a community to support those struggling with suicidal thoughts and substance use disorder. We can also educate ourselves and others about the importance of seeking help when needed and shifting the stigma that can sometimes be associated with substance abuse.

Everyone has a role in preventing suicide. You can help save a life by knowing the warning signs and understanding what to do when recognizing someone is at risk. Through education, we can also offer a hopeful message of support to help those dealing with substance abuse on their road to recovery. By sharing our experiences and knowledge, we can create an open and supportive environment.

Additionally, consider participating in local events, classes and activities that promote mental health, such as meditation or yoga classes, walks or community-led workshops. These initiatives foster personal well-being, provide insight into ways we can help our community and demonstrate our commitment to suicide prevention and recovery support.

If you or someone you know needs help, please know that resources are available in our community. The Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services provides various services, including crisis support, counseling and referral services. Also, the 988 Oklahoma Mental Health Lifeline provides 24/7, free, confidential and accessible mental health support when you call or text 9-8-8.

Free Fentanyl Test Strips and Naloxone Kits can also be ordered by visiting https:// okimready.org/.

Together, let us create a community prioritizing suicide prevention, recovery from substance use disorder and well-being for all. Please join me in honoring lives lost while supporting Oklahomans working toward recovery during National Suicide Prevention and Recovery Month this September.
